Clothing Label Size Guide: Dimensions, Folds & Placements
When designing custom trims, choosing the correct label dimensions is just as important as selecting artwork colors. An oversized neck label can cause skin abrasion, while an undersized label can result in illegible wash care text or sewing needle collisions during assembly.

Understanding Seam Allowance (Sewing Margin)
Every clothing label that is stitched into a garment seam requires adequate blank border space known as the seam allowance:
- Center Fold Labels: Require 6mm to 8mm of unprinted/unwoven space at the top of the folded label so the stitching needle does not cut through brand text.
- End Fold Labels: Standard 5mm to 7mm folded tabs on both ends. Ensure your artwork maintains at least 3mm clearance inside the fold creases.
- Laser Cut / All-Around Stitch: Require 2mm to 3mm perimeter clearance around all four edges for perimeter sewing threads.
Typography & Line Weight Rules for Woven Labels
Because jacquard looms weave threads rather than printing dots of ink, physical thread geometry imposes technical constraints:
- Minimum Letter Height: 1.5mm for high-density 50D damask; 2.5mm for 100D damask. Lowercase letters smaller than 1.5mm may fill in with background warp threads.
- Minimum Stroke Thickness: 0.18mm line weight ensures clear thread definition without blur.
- Vector Art Requirements: Always supply production vector files in Adobe Illustrator (.AI), PDF, or EPS formats with all type converted to outlines.
